Tony's Country Life Health Foods a store with varieties of choices.
Bed-Stuy is always being discussed in the media as a food desert. A food desert is a place where healthy, fresh, or natural foods cannot be purchased. Being a resident of Bed-Stuy, smack dab in the middle of the neighborhood, I can attest to the overall lack of access by my house. I am not here to argue, but sometimes, you just need to be able to buy some fresh veggies that have real nutrients in them. It took me walking into five bodegas last night at 8pm before I could find a veggie that was not an onion or iceberg lettuce. Instead, I found a bag of frozen mixed veggies (the corn and carrot niblet type mix) which I begrudgingly tried to find a use for in my dinner.
Luckily, if you know where to look, Fulton Street does offer fresh, natural, local, and organic options! Bed-Stuy REJOICE!!!! The next few blog posts will highlight some of these options, but here is one of my favorites: Tony’s Country Life Health Food is EPIC and helps turn this food desert idea upside-down!
First opening its doors in 1989, Guyanese immigrant John Baldeo has been welcoming neighbors for 23 years with access to organic, vegetarian, all natural foods, health products, supplements, and hard-to-find ingredients. I first found this place crammed into a small storefront along Fulton a few years ago looking for ingredients for an Aloo Gobi dish I was trying to make. What really makes me excited about Tony’s, besides the awesome frozen and fridge section, is the bulk section. One of the few places in Brooklyn to get bulk dried goods, and it is right here on Fulton Street! Their assortment of vegetarian and vegan meat substitutes is out of this world and they have a dizzying assortment of leaf- and bag-teas. Apparently, Yelp! user Lesly S. ate as much of the ‘Coconut Crunch’ at Tony’s “as she possibly could, and contemplated going back to buy more for the trip home.” Yummers.
